VASECTOMY
A vasectomy is a form of birth control. It is a common surgical procedure performed on male patients to cut or seal the tubes that carry sperm. The aim is to prevent male patients from fathering children in the future. Although the tubes that carry sperm re-joining is rare, it does occur in one in 2,000 cases. A vasectomy operation can take as little as 15 minutes to complete.
preparation for a vasectomy PROCEDURE
Before a vasectomy procedure takes place, patients will attend a consultation with their doctor. Vasectomy surgery is more than 99% effective the first time it is completed. The procedure does not reduce the male sex drive nor does it stop men from enjoying intercourse. A vasectomy prevents semen from containing sperm thus causing pregnancy. Patients will need to be sure a vasectomy is right for them. A vasectomy can be reversed, but a reversal may not be successful.

A vasectomy procedure takes as little as 15 minutes to perform, it is so quick that patients can be on their way home in just a short time. Patients are given a local anaesthetic and are awake during a vasectomy procedure. In some cases, patients can be completely put under anaesthetic for the surgery to be completed. This usually occurs when the patient suffers from needle-phobia or the sperm tubes are difficult to feel. There are two types of vasectomies available to patients. A conventional vasectomy occurs when the doctor makes two small scalpel cuts to reach the sperm tubes. A no-scalpel vasectomy is done when a small puncture hole is made in the skin rather than cuts.
RECOVERY from a vasectomy
Generally, the scrotum can become bruised and swollen following a vasectomy procedure. Patients may also experience soreness and pain can last for some time in the testicles. As with all surgical procedures, patients can also experience infections. Patients will have discomfort in the groin area for a few days following a vasectomy. Doctors recommend over the counter pain medication to alleviate the discomfort of the procedure. Along with taking pain medication, applying ice to the testicles and wearing snug underpants can reduce swelling and pain. Men should refrain from doing any physical work or activity for a few days after the procedure.
