INTRALESIONAL INJECTIONS
Intralesional injections are a treatment option for Peyronie’s Disease. It is a non-surgical, minimally invasive technique which involves injecting a medical substance called collagenase directly into the scar tissue which can cause the penile curvature.
Intralesional injections of collagenase were recently introduced as a non-surgical measure to decrease penile curvature. Surgery remains the most effective treatment for Peyronie’s disease and is considered the gold standard.
PROCEDURE FOR INTRALESIONAL INJECTIONS
The procedure is a day case. Before the procedure you will need an initial consultation to assess the degree of curvature and point of maximum curvature. The patient is given an injection to create an erection to enable the consultant to perform the required measurements.
Two further outpatient appointments are made for you within 7 days of each other. You will receive an injection of Collagenase into the scar tissue at each of these appointments. The consultant manually stretches the penis and injects directly into the scar tissue.
RECOVERY FOR INTRALESIONAL INJECTIONS
There will be some discomfort, swelling and bruising for up to a week after each injection. Simple painkillers can be taken once you are home.
You will have a pressure bandage on your penis which needs to be kept in place for approximately 6 hours post injection. Elevating the penis with padding or gauze will help alleviate swelling and bruising.
You should abstain from sexual penetrative intercourse for six weeks, although having erections during this time is advised. The consultant/nurse will advise you on how to use the vacuum device therapy following your second injection.
You may drive yourself home.
